Very nice. They rarely did an Ollin Arageed space without Hamza el-din around.
Here's another nice Ollin space from the same period:

Do you happen to know if Hamza was at that show? That was my third show (the first being two days earlier), but the heck if I'd have known who the heck Hamza el Din was, or remembered it if anyone had said anything! Just curious ...

He was not at that show. You couldn't have missed him.
He did show up for a couple of the October '78 Winterland shows, 11/24/78, 12/30/78, and 8/5/79.

Thanks. Couldn't have missed him? Hmmm ... well, maybe not, ya know, physically on the stage at the time, but I'm afraid memory doesn't always cooperate in holding the Most Musically Significant Moments!

Guess what I remember from that show, music-wise? Donna singing From the Heart of Me. Really. (OK, also the opening Jack Straw, I think, and the general set-and-setting; but all the Jack Straws and Scarlet-Fires combine ... it's only Donna's tune that I can distinctly place to this particular show.)

No Hamza on 11/18/78. Try the three Egyptian performances or 10/21-22/78 and 11/24/78 for some cool Nubian Grateful Dead jamming. The Oud and Tar master also sat in on 12/30/78 and a handful of assorted shows between August of 1979 and NYE 1990...

I'd agree that the Egypt shows and Winterland 10/21-22 are where to find the collaborative Hamza/Dead Ollins in full flight.
11/24/78 is a total bust as far as Ollin is concerned - it's just Hamza quietly tapping away by himself without the guitarists participating. 8/5/79 is another blown opportunity, as once again they don't join him.

But at this show, they do, and it's a treat:

No, chanting not withstanding, the Tar duet with Mickey is rather cool...

You didn't think the Grateful Dead were going to return from Nubia without any cool souvenirs...

Thx Bookends. Anything interesting in the Bob interview at the end of the gig?
